Toronto, 1960. Mo and Birdie are like fish out of water.
Mo is Jewish and sardonic; Birdie's black, thoughtful and gargantuan. They're private detectives.
Henry Turner disappeared eight years ago, and his mother wants him back. Mo and Birdie try to find him; they search high and low.
Mo has family issues; his brother, Eli, is a rotten gambler. He’s in hock to John Fat Gai — the city’s most notorious gangster. Mo and Birdie need to find John’s missing money.
If they do, Eli goes free. If not, he's toast. They’ve got three days. But when Mo's father, Jake, escapes from prison, all hell breaks loose.
The city is known as Toronto the Good. But Mo never sees that side.

Was pleasantly surprised by how good this book turned out to be. I mostly read contemporary fiction, so going back in time to 1960 was a gamble. I would compare this book favorably to the Easy Rawlins genre (by Walter Mosley) which I also read. Worth a look!Product details

Looking for Henry Turner edition by WL Liberman Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I have been awake the last two nights so I could finish this book without interruption. The characters are easy to see in my mind and I loved the twists and turns. Totally unpredictable.
I really enjoyed the book and feel it was well written. It kept my interest throughout. It felt like the author didn't know how to end it though, so he just had everything blow up.
Not my kind of story or writing style. Hard to keep track of so many characters. However, I did like the two private detectives. I enjoyed their relationship, their characters and the way they supported each other. There was enough of a mystery to keep me reading to the end (without cheating) to see just what did happen to Henry.
Held my interest from start to finish. Enjoyed the way the author made each character come to life. This could be a good movie.
If you like The thin man books by Dashiell Hammett, I think you will love this mystery. Mo Gold and Birdie Birdwell are private eyes in Toronto. The day they meet Aida Turner they are in for a suspense filled mystery. They learn that Aida's son Henry Turner has been missing eight years and the adventure begins. This is a well written book that keeps the readers attention and tease there brain as they try to figure out the ending for themselves.
I liked the writing style and choice of phrases.
It was the little things. Chapter 40 saw Mo and Birdie in stressful situation with bad guys and guns. Then Chapter 41 gives us a respite, while Mo, and Birdie grab a bite. The two sit down for a moment and unwind, while we are treated to a colorful description of how they order and their breakfast being whipped up. I was IN the diner with them.
Well done.
This hard boiled detective novel set in Toronto in 1960 is an enjoyable read that I recommend to anyone who enjoys the genre. Thought was given to the main characters, Jewish detective Mo Gold who is the first person narrator of the book; and his partner Arthur Birdwell, a gargantuan black man who goes by Birdie.
The backstory is fairly well developed. Mo and Birdie met on a troopship carrying them to Europe during WWII and fought the war together. Mo's reminiscences about his father help make sense of their relationship.
The setting contributes nicely to the storyline. The author's assertion that Toronto's Chinatown has the largest Chinese population outside Asia and his description of Don Jail help ground the story and make the events that unfold seem, if not inevitable, then more believable.
The grammar and diction are smooth and flowing. This is important for me, so much so that I would have given a 3.5 star rating if I could have.
If there are so many good elements to the novel, if I enjoyed the read, and I heartily recommend it, then why just three stars? Though well written and interestingly plotted, some of the elements are too predictable or neat. Mo's father Jake is rather predictable and his brother Eli is a cardboard cutout. The prison riot in which Mo's father escapes is too neat, and as soon as it starts, you know why it is happening. Except for the times Mo is ambushed, he (or he and Birdie) prevails just a bit too handily during their physical confrontations. The riot is a glaring example of this. The book is a page-turner through the climax, but the final three chapters are devoted to oh-so-neatly tying up ALL the loose ends. Everything was so neatly put away, it was difficult to guess whether there'll be a second Mo Gold and Birdie offering.
The author's notes imply this is a first novel. If so, it is a fine first book and I look forward to another. "Looking for Henry Turner" is a good read. It is somewhat flawed, but in this first offering the for-the-most-part well done characters, storyline and setting outweigh the flaws.
